The Upside Gallery is a unique and permanent outdoor street art gallery featuring some of the UK’s most exciting and progressive artists from the graffiti & urban art scene.
Transforming a neglected space in the heart of Bournemouth’s Central Gardens, the gallery re-purposes the functional 10m concrete supports of the Wessex Way into a free, beautiful, public art destination.
Featured artists have built their Internationally acclaimed reputation by pushing their art-form in new and exciting directions. The gallery presents this amazing diversity and talent in an environment that can perfectly capture the power of this growing art movement.
The idea was conceived and driven by local creative agency Paintshop Studio, who as regular users of the Central Gardens recognised the potential of the space, and the dramatic beauty created by the concrete supports.
Paintshop Studio directors, Rick Walker and Sandra Ramos, set about to bring the idea to life – enlisting the help of BCP Council, securing funding from Arts Council England and partnering with local companies, experts in their relevant fields.
In the autumn of 2019, 11 commissioned artists started work to change this uninviting and unloved space into someplace positive and inspiring for the whole community, showcasing this amazing art-form to new audiences.
Since its completion the Upside Gallery has seen visitors from all walks of life including, school art trips, photography shoots, bike clubs, fire dancers and more…
Each mural has been fitted with a plaque allowing visitors and passers-by to find out more about each artwork and the artist. The plaques also contain a QR code that can be scanned with a smartphone to access short interviews from the artist and production footage of the murals taking shape.
